Great rice cooker for the money

I picked this cooker up from Costco for under thirty bucks. If you don't want to spend a lot on a computerized rice cooker, this is the one for you. It's the cheapest fuzzy logic rice cooker on the market, but still makes great rice. It doesn't have a bunch of extra functions you'd never use, just white rice, brown rice, quick rice, and steam cook.
You have to play around a little with the amount of water when cooking the rice. If it's too dry, just add a little bit more water and leave it in keep warm mode for about 15 minutes. If you're planning on using keep warm mode, you also have to add a bit more water to keep the rice from burning to the bottom.
I've used mine for everything from steaming veggies to making steel cut oats. One thing I particularly like is that when you set the timer for steaming, it doesn't start counting down until the water is actually boiling.
The only thing I'd like better was if there were extra internal bowls available. I had originally bought this one thinking to use it until I got a more expensive rice cooker, but that purchase has been put on hold indefinitely simply because this one works so well.
To make steel cut oats, I use the brown rice function due to the long soaking time. Just add 4 cups water to every 1 cup of oats. Also add pat of butter or a bit of oil to the water to keep it from boiling over, and a pinch of salt. You can add raisins or other dried fruit if you like. I usually make a double batch, and it comes out perfect every time. Perfectly cooked with that unique chewy steel cut oat texture. No more soaking and making it on the stove for me. |

I wanted a rice cooker that specifically had a brown rice function since we love brown rice but it can be so hard to cook it well other ways (I've tried stovetop, pressure cooker, and baking in the oven).
So far, I'm thrilled - the brown rice was amazing, first try; I've also done bulgur and quinoa using the white rice setting and both have been perfect with no adjustments. I love that the pot is non-stick and that the condensation from the lid is caught in a reservoir - it doesn't go down the side of the pot or inside where it's going to damage the cooker itself.
Delay timer is also extremely helpful - if I know I want dinner at six, I can set the cooker up any time (allowing for cooking time) and have the rice ready right on time without having to think about it. The cooking cycle is long but worth it for the results.
One caveat - whatever you are cooking will crust to the bottom the longer you leave it on "keep warm" - I suggest you turn it off as soon as it's done. It will remain warm in the pot for a time with the lid closed anyway. And if you use the delay timer, you can schedule it to be done right on time anyway. |

I have owned other rice cookers over the years. With other rice cookers, brown rice and seasoned rice both have a tendency to become crispy on the bottom, when the heating element remains on for too much time. I am happy to say that this rice cooker finally let me make perfect rice every time.
This rice cooker has a temperature sensor that regulates how much heat is applied to the rice, depending on the type - long grain, brown, instant - resulting in perfect rice every time I have used it.
I also like the small condensation collector that holds any of the moisture that drips from the lid, keeping my counter and cooker clean. |
Amazing for the price

I did a lot of research online before choosing this rice cooker. It received the highest ratings in blog reviews when people were testing it out against other brands. I love brown rice but never have the time to cook it,being a full time student and also working a full time job. This fixed that problem. Yes, if you use the delay setting the rice will brown a little on the bottom but it is never overcooked. Also, in some cultures, the browned rice on the bottom is desirable and actually quite tasty! But you could play around with the water function. Do remember it takes about an hour or more of soaking the brown rice, so if you are using the delay figure in the extra time. I always figure two hours less on the delay so the rice is actually done when I come back home.
I have done every imaginable type of rice in here. The only types that dont do well are minute rice and Uncle Bens brown rice, which is an inferior rice anyway. It turns into what looks like oatmeal.
I have also cooked lentils in here on the white rice function. I had to add extra water as the first time they came out like paste!
One final thing, that just makes this the absolute best for me, is that it cleans up easy and fast, even if the rice browns on the bottom it comes right out and washing it you need nothing more than a sponge, no scrubbing!

Great Rice Cooker!

| I spent hours researching rice cookers before deciding to buy this one. As a recent convert to healthy eating and cooking, this machine was just what I needed. It had to be simple - I am not a cook and once caught my kitchen on fire trying to make garlic bread! It had to make great rice on it's own, cause my first stovetop attempts to make rice looked more like cement than rice. It also had to make large amounts of rice at a time because I am pre-packaging lunches for my husband so he can eat healthy while at work. This machine delivers on all counts. It is foolproof - follow the directions and you get perfect rice every time - it's that simple! I love the delay timer function - I can setup everything for dinner and it is ready to eat when I come home from the gym at night. The keep warm function is great - cause it doesn't matter if I'm a few minutes late getting home. And yes, like some people have stated in previous reviews, it will turn brown on the bottom if you leave it on keep warm for too long - but I kinda like it when it does that - it just adds a little color to the rice - it doesn't burn it. Heck, I make mostly brown rice anyway! This also steams perfectly and the unit is super easy to clean. And the removable non-stick inner pot is great - I just pull it out when the rice is done, add a bag of veggies and some chicken or fish, mix it up in the same pot, and dinner is served! I LOVE this rice cooker and I would give it 10 stars if I could. Like the dehydrator and bread machine I also have from Aroma, this cooker does exactly what it is supposed to do, and does it well. |
